Pelvic pain

If you are a woman with pelvic pain, you are not alone. Many women suffer from pelvic pain and have accepted it as part of “being a woman.” This suffering is always not necessary. The latest technology provides effective diagnosis and treatment options. Frequently, pelvic pain can be effectively treated on an outpatient basis, thus avoiding major surgery and prolonged hospital stays.

Pelvic pain varies from woman to woman. Symptoms can include painful periods, pain with intercourse, a constant or intermittent aching, or a combination of these. Common causes of this pain include scar tissue, infections, cysts, fibroids, and endometriosis. Unfortunately, many women wait until the pain has completely disrupted their lifestyles before seeking care.

Treating pelvic pain begins with a thorough history and physical exam. A sonogram may also be done. Other problems such as abnormal bleeding and bladder problems can be evaluated at the same time. If medication and observation fails or has failed in the past, then the next step may be a procedure called laparoscopy. This procedure is done in the day-surgery setting with the patient asleep. A small “band-aid” incision is made in the abdomen and a narrow scope is passed into the abdominal cavity. Then the uterus, tubes, ovaries, and pelvic walls can be directly visualized.

Frequently, problems such as cysts, scar tissue and endometriosis can be treated at this time. Patients are usually able to go home the same day and are back to their normal activities within a few days. This procedure frequently replaces the need for more extensive surgery which would require a hospital stay and six weeks of recovery.

Living with pelvic pain is not part of “being a woman”. Treatment options are available. Call today for an appointment or second opinion. Take the next step in improving the quality of your life. This procedure is considered standard medical therapy and typically covered by insurance.
